Anatomy

What goes on a compliant label

We apply one wrap-around label to each bottle. Hover over each element to see where it sits on our template. Exact requirements vary by market — the next sections cover them.

Example layout based on our 30 mL silver airless template (102 × 45 mm). Arrange elements to suit your design.
  1. Brand name

Your brand. Give it space, but don't let it crowd out mandatory text.

  2. Product name and function

Say what the product is, e.g. hydrating face serum. It's the “statement of identity” on US labels, and EU/UK labels must show the function unless it's obvious.

  3. Claims

Cosmetic claims only — appearance, cleansing, moisturising. “Treats acne” and similar claims make a product a therapeutic good in Australia.

  4. Net quantity

Net volume in millilitres and US fluid ounces on every label, e.g. Net 30 mL (1.01 fl oz).

  5. Directions for use

How and when to use the product. You can reword ours, as long as the meaning doesn't change.

  6. Precautionary statement

Our standard precautionary statement, word for word, plus any product-specific statement from the product page — e.g. the fish-derivative statement on our Salmon PDRN serum.

  7. Ingredient list

Full list, comma-separated, in descending order using INCI names, copied exactly from the product page. EU and UK labels must also name fragrance allergens above threshold.

  8. Distributed by

Distributed by [Your Business Name], [City, State, Postcode]. The EU and UK also need a local Responsible Person; the US needs a US address, phone number or website for adverse-event reports.

  9. 12M PAO symbol

The 12M PAO (Period After Opening) symbol must appear on every label — it shows the product should be used within 12 months of opening. EU/UK products with a durability of 30 months or less also need a best-before date.

  10. Country of origin

“Made in Australia” must appear on every label. Our products are made at our Gold Coast facility, so the claim is accurate.

Our requirements

Must appear on every label

These come from our label design guidelines and apply to every order, whichever market you sell in. Labels missing any of them are sent back for changes.

  • Net volume in mL and fl ozRequired

Both units, e.g. Net 30 mL (1.01 fl oz) or Net 50 mL (1.69 fl oz).

  • Precautionary statement, word for wordRequired

“Suitable for all skin types. For external use only. Discontinue use if irritation occurs. Keep out of reach of children. Store below 25°C and away from direct sunlight.”

  • Directions for useRequired

Copy them from the product page. You may reword them, but the meaning must stay the same.

  • Ingredient list, exactly as on the product pageRequired

Comma-separated, in descending order, with the same INCI names. Don't edit, reorder or shorten it.

  • “Made in Australia”Required

Every product we make is made at our Gold Coast facility.

  • “Distributed by” lineRequired

Distributed by [Your Business Name], [City, State, Postcode]. Adding your website is optional.

  • 12M PAO symbolRequired

The 12M PAO (Period After Opening) symbol — the open-jar icon marked 12M. Our template includes it.

  • Mandatory text in EnglishRequired

You can add other languages, but every mandatory element must also be in English.

  • Not enough room? Use outer packagingNote

Mandatory information can go on outer packaging such as a box instead — but you must tell us by email or in the note at checkout, or the label will be sent back.

  • Batch/lot code — we print it for youNote

We print the batch/lot code on the base of every bottle, so you don't need to add one to your label.

Requirements by market

What each market requires

Selling in more than one market? Build one master label that meets all of them — the EU and US add the most requirements.

Australia

Consumer Goods (Cosmetics) Information Standard 2020, enforced by the ACCC

  • Full ingredient list, prominent and clearly legible, on the container. If it won't fit, it must be shown another way that lets customers see it — for example on a tag or leaflet.
  • Order: descending by mass or volume — or ingredients at 1% or more in descending order, then those under 1% in any order, then colour additives in any order.
  • Names: English or INCI names. Incidental ingredients don't need to be listed.
  • Net quantity and the packer's name and address on pre-packaged goods, under trade measurement law.
  • Warning statements required by the Poisons Standard (SUSMP) if the formula contains a scheduled substance.
  • Cosmetic claims only. Therapeutic claims make the product a therapeutic good regulated by the TGA.

General guidance, current at October 2026. Regulations change, so confirm the requirements for your products and markets before printing. Our international regulatory guide has more detail.

Who's responsible for the label?

The brand owner — the supplier, or the Responsible Person in the EU and UK — is legally responsible for label compliance. We supply the ingredient list and compliance documents for every product, and can help with safety assessments, PIFs and EU notifications if you need them.

Claims

What you can say on a label

Claims are where most label problems start. Keep them cosmetic, accurate and backed by evidence you hold.

OK

Cosmetic claims

Claims about appearance, cleansing, fragrance or keeping skin in good condition — for example “hydrates and softens skin”, “reduces the appearance of fine lines” or “gently exfoliates”.

Avoid

Therapeutic claims

Claims to treat, cure or prevent a condition — “treats acne”, “heals eczema”, “anti-inflammatory” — make a product a therapeutic good in Australia and a drug in the US.

Never

“TGA approved” or “FDA approved”

Cosmetics aren't approved by either regulator, so these phrases mislead customers. Describe what you can substantiate instead.

Testing required

SPF and sun protection

SPF claims need testing to AS/NZS 2604, and primary sunscreens are TGA-regulated in Australia. Only put SPF on a label when the formula has been tested for it.

Substantiate

Natural, organic, vegan, cruelty-free

These must be accurate and provable. Certification logos need certification, and regulators are actively pursuing greenwashing.

Evidence needed

“Clinically proven” and “dermatologist tested”

Only use these if you hold test results for your exact finished product. An ingredient supplier's data doesn't cover your formula.

OK

Made in Australia

Products made at our Gold Coast facility can carry “Made in Australia”. The Australian Made kangaroo logo needs a licence from the Australian Made Campaign.

Be careful

“Free from” claims

“Paraben-free” or “fragrance-free” must be true for every ingredient, including components of fragrance blends and raw-material carriers.

Recommended

Product-specific statements

Some formulas have a recommended statement on their product page — for example the fish-derivative statement on our Salmon PDRN serum. Copy it onto your label.

Label types

How your labels are printed

Know the stock before you design — it changes how colours and text look on the bottle.

Most packaging

Clear stock — our default

Every label is printed on clear stock unless your packaging is listed below as an exception.

Exception

White matte — 30 mL frosted glass

Labels for the 30 mL frosted glass bottle (clear or amber) are printed on white matte stock.

Design tip

The bottle shows through

On clear stock, any area you leave unprinted shows the container colour. Want a solid look? Add a background colour to your design.

On request

Special printing or finishes

Want a specific print treatment or finish? Ask in the note at checkout and we'll confirm what's possible.

Your market

Compliance is yours

We check labels against our guidelines, but making sure the label meets the rules of every market you sell in is your responsibility.

Artwork specs

Artwork checklist

Run through this before you share your design. These specs come from our label design guidelines.

  • Exact label sizeRequired

Artwork must match the height × width for your packaging in the label sizes table.

  • 2 mm bleedRequired

Extend background colours and images 2 mm beyond the trim edge so no white line shows after cutting.

  • 2 mm safe zoneRequired

Keep all text and logos at least 2 mm inside the trim edge so nothing is cut off or lost around a curve.

  • Minimum font size 4Required

No text smaller than size 4, including the ingredient list. US ingredient declarations also have a minimum lettering height of 1/16 inch.

  • Mandatory text in EnglishRequired

Every mandatory element must be in English. You can add other languages alongside it.

Common mistakes

Mistakes we send back

  • Missing ingredient list or precautionary statementDon't

Both are mandatory. Copy them exactly — the precautionary statement word for word.

  • Editing the ingredient listDon't

Reordering, shortening or “tidying” INCI names makes the list inaccurate. Copy it exactly.

  • Text below size 4 or too close to the edgeDon't

Small text is unreadable once printed, and anything inside the 2 mm safe zone can be trimmed off.

  • Millilitres onlyDon't

Every label needs mL and US fl oz, e.g. Net 30 mL (1.01 fl oz).

  • Therapeutic or medical claimsDon't

“Treats”, “cures”, “heals” and “prevents” move a product out of the cosmetics category.

  • Tell us about outer packagingDo

If mandatory information is on a box rather than the label, email us or add a note at checkout.

  • Design for your strictest marketDo

If you'll sell in the EU or US, build those requirements into one master label from the start.

  • Print a test copy at 100%Do

Wrap it around the actual packaging to check fit, curves and readability.

  • Add product-specific statementsDo

Copy any recommended statement from the product page, such as allergen or fish-derivative warnings.

Using your own labels?

We don't apply customer-supplied labels. If you'd rather label products yourself, we can supply them unlabelled — compliance with labelling laws is then your responsibility.

FAQ

Label questions

Can I design my label in something other than Canva?

Yes. Use Illustrator, Photoshop, Affinity or any design tool, as long as the artwork matches the label dimensions for your packaging. Upload it on the product page.

Where do I get the ingredient list?

Every product page has an internationally compliant full ingredient list. Compliance documents are in our document library.

Why is my label clear? Can I get white?

All labels are printed on clear stock, except for the 30 mL frosted glass bottle, which uses white matte. On clear stock the container colour shows through unprinted areas, so add a background colour for a solid look. For a specific print treatment or finish, ask in the note at checkout.

Do I need an expiry date?

Australian law doesn't require one, but our guidelines require the 12M PAO symbol, which shows the product should be used within 12 months of opening. In the EU and UK, products with a minimum durability of 30 months or less also need a best-before date — that includes our white label products.

My product is tiny. Where does the ingredient list go?

Mandatory information can go on outer packaging, such as a box, instead of the label. Tell us by email or in the note at checkout so we don't send the label back. Australian and EU rules also allow the ingredient list on a tag or leaflet when it won't fit — talk to us before you rely on this.

Can my label be in another language?

Yes, as long as all the mandatory information is also in English.

Do I need a batch number on my label?

No. We print the batch/lot code on the base of every bottle during production, so leave it off your label design.

Do I need to list fragrance allergens?

In the EU and UK, yes — above 0.001% in leave-on and 0.01% in rinse-off products. The EU's expanded list applies to products placed on the market from 31 July 2026. See our allergen labelling update for our formulas.

Can I put “Made in Australia” on my label?

Yes, for products made at our Gold Coast facility. The Australian Made kangaroo logo needs a separate licence.

Will you check my label for compliance?

We can help. Our team supports label compliance and documentation for Australia, the EU, the US and other markets. Final responsibility sits with the brand owner.

Can I supply pre-printed labels?

No — we don't apply customer-supplied labels. We can supply products unlabelled so you can label them yourself.
